TRAIL NOTES

3/11: After requests from property owners and seeing lots of bare trails, we closed the trails.  The Ossipee Trail is still open to RT 16 and available via the parking lot on RT 171.

3/9: The warm sunny weather is changing things fast.  Today, we are closing the east side trails, from Ambrose Marina to the Castle Parking lot on RT 171.  Red Hill was groomed last night and still in good shape.  We are checking the neck trails today.  Our hopes are to last through the weekend but the situation is changing by the hour.  Today and tomorrow are supposed to be sunny and warm, so no good will come of that.  Stay tuned.

3/8: I’m reminded of the book, “A Tale of Two Cities”.  It was the best of conditions, the worst of conditions.  While grooming the VK trail, then turning towards the Evergreen Island access to Winni and Lees Pond, and then the Village Trail, conditions ranged from bare ground to very deep snow.  At times the Gator got stuck due to the depth.  So, conditions in some parts can be considered good.  However, the mud puddles near the club garage and between Ambrose Cove and RT 109 contribute to the “Marginal” rating.  Also, lake access points are dicey at best.  We can’t groom the access points where we can’t turn around, because the “heavier than a sled” groomer isn’t going on the ice.  It is obvious that some sledders are though.  With light mid-week traffic, conditions should hold till the weekend, even with daily temperatures above freezing.  Enjoy it while it is here.

3/6: Saturday brought us up to 9″, but the weather has been warm since.  Trails remain open but there are big mud puddles just east of the club garage on the way to the Village Kitchen and on C15 between Ambrose Cove Marina and 109.  Travel there is not recommended.  We will continue to groom this week in anticipation of the weekend.  Beyond that, we’ll see what happens.

3/1: We’ve received about a foot of snow across a bunch of small storms.  Eric rolled most the west side of the trail system on Tuesday.  Some more snow is expected Wednesday night and Friday night.  Daytime temperatures are forecasted to be above freezing over the next week, so conditions will deteriorate, but this weekend should be fairly good riding.  There are lots of water bars, some that have never frozen all season, but the base elsewhere is good.  Ride them while you can.

2/26: A heavy dose of flurries have brought 2-3″ since Saturday night.  This is improving the trail conditions, allowing an upgrade to moderate.  The base is still thin in many spots.  Word from the state is that the Castle/Ossipee trail is very icy until reaching altitude, when conditions improve.  We’re keeping an eye on the Tuesday storm, forecast to bring about 5″ more.

2/23 3PM: With three to six inches of new snow and frigid temperatures forecasted, we opened the trails again.  There isn’t enough to groom or roll, but hopefully more will come.  All gates are open, including Red Hill and Castle/Ossipee Trails.  Base is thin and water bars may be hidden, so conditions are marginal, but there for the taking.

2/18 9AM: Trails remain closed, including Red Hill and the West side of the Ossipees.   We will consider reopening if conditions are restored.  Long range forecasts look interesting but could just be a case of Lucy holding the football.

2/13 7AM: Trails are CLOSED until conditions improve.  The base is already thin, at least in the low-lands and temperatures are forecast to be about 10 degrees above normal this week.  C15 through the Ossipees is controlled by the state, so may remain open.  Parking is available on RT 171 across from the trail entrance.

2023 Trail Maps available at the Country Store and Haffner’s (formerly 603 Fuel) or where you register your sled at Heath’s Hardware, DaSilva’s Motorsports and Skelley’s Market.  Additional locations will become available once the season opens.

We heard from the Bureau of Trails that the route to Meredith, previously announced as closed, will be open this season along the original path.

Thanks to members that have already renewed.  We are at 70% of last year’s membership count.  Much of our operations costs are spent before the first snowfall, so your pre-season membership dues and donations keep us ready to deal with maintenance issues after the season opens and have enough left for next fall’s work.

2023 Season

3/11: Trails Closed.

3/9: Closing east side today.  Red Hill groomed last night and is good.  Checking other trails.

3/8: Groomed Evergreen, Lees, Village and Greens Basin Trails.  Deep base in some spot, bare ground and mud holes in other spots.

3/6: 9″ on Saturday (3/4) but warm weather is keeping some trails thin and big mud puddles are effectively closing several stretches of trails.

3/1: Total of about a foot in the past week.  West side is rolled.

2/26: Another 3″+ are improving conditions.  Still ice under and thin base.

2/23: With 4-6″ of new snow and cold temps on the way, we opened the gates today.  Conditions are marginal and water bars are hidden.

2/18: Trails remain closed, including west side of Ossipees.  Forecast for late next week looks interesting but it will take a lot of snow to reopen the trails.  We’ll see what March brings.

2/13: Trails are closed until conditions improve.  Temperatures are forecast to be well above normal for the week.

2/9: Warm temperatures and rain have damaged the trails.  They are soft, muddy and only remain open due to the fishing derby.  Trails will close on Sunday evening, until if/when winter returns.

2/4: Temps reached -17 overnight.  Everything was groomed by Friday noon then groomers were put away for the cold.  C15 from Ambrose to Castle Parking lot still closed.  Elsewhere, frozen water bars, puddles and icy streams down some trails.  Water access was punky a few days ago, before the deep freeze.

2/2: Cold temps have firmed up the water-bars.  Grooming will resume today, then suspend over the weekend due to forecasted temps near zero.  Base is thin in some areas with occasional bare spots and frozen water-bars.  No significant snow in the forecast.

1/30: Grooming is suspended until things freeze up again.  Riding in the low-land trails is not recommended.

1/29: Red Hill and Ossipees remain best riding.  Warm temperatures and sled traffic took its toll yesterday.  The east side trails are closed due to excessive mud holes.  Many of the lake entrances are reported to have open water holes.

1/28: Most trails have been packed or groomed, except for the powerline swamp.  With temperatures in forecast to hit 40 today, we recommend staying off the trails.

1/27: Cold temperatures overnight firmed up the slush from yesterday.  Packing and grooming will continue today.  Conditions will improve with traffic and additional grooming but more snow and continued cold weather is needed.

1/26: Two inches of snow/slush and then rain fell.  Lake ice is showing lots of wet and punky areas.  Will be resuming packing today.

1/25 PM: After a day of grooming, lots of trails are packed, many are not and most gates are open.

1/25 Wednesday AM: With over a foot on the ground and more forecast, the trails opened this morning.  It is a soft opening.  There are still gates closed, unpacked trails, water bars and unfrozen swamps to content with.  Early season conditions to be sure.  Volunteers are working on all issues.

1/20 Friday PM: We received 2″-6″ Thursday night and Friday.  Probably more in the mountains.  Not enough to take our equipment out to groom, so trails remain not open.  More snow is forecast for Sunday night and perhaps Wednesday night.  We will see.  The equipment is gassed up and ready to go.  We’ll keep you informed here.

1/19 – Storms are forecast for Thursday and Sunday nite and long range hints at a storm next Wednesday.  The club equipment is in top repair, gassed up and ready to go.  At the moment, we are planning to pack and check trails starting Monday, 1/23.
